Design Principles: Readability, Legibility & Hierarchy (Part 2)

From the 11 accents that we had to produce for the session, we had to get into groups of 5 and work out how people had interpretted the accents we were given by arranging the print outs into piles of 11 groups.
The 5 piles of interpretted accents we had to group together
We had to provide reasons as to why we had specifically grouped different accent interpretations together:
  • Chinese- Oriental Appearance, Brushstrokes, Slanted
  • German- Blackletter, Block Font, Capitals
  • South African- Bold and Lowercase, Italic/Slanted/Jaunty
  • Scottish- Celtic/Gaelic Font, Traditional, Decorative
  • Texan- Slab Serif, Block Text
  • Mexican- Decorative, Lots of Dots
  • Italian- Script, Fluid
  • Cockney- Jagged
  • Somerset- Lowercase, Serif Fonts
  • Birmingham- Informal, Lowercase
  • Swedish- Simple

The 11 Groups of Interpretted accents grouped together
We felt as a group, we were the strongest at putting all of the interpretted German, Chinese and Mexican accents together, however, when this was queried it turns out that we wern't that good at all!

After this, we then had to go back to the piles we had created that had been organised by a different group of people. We then had to rearrange our own accents into thier correct piles of 11.

Our own groups Interpretted accents in order in 11 piles
As a group, we then had to come up with 5 rules of Typography:
  1. Don't use more thgan 2 or 3 fonts on 1 piece of work
  2. Choice of font must be appropriate to the content
  3. When you increase tyhe weight, increase the kerning of a font
  4. Use appropriate spacing to optimise readability
  5. Use neccessary point size and try to fit it all on 1 line

Study Task (Prepartory):

We have been asked to bring in 15 objects or items of A4-A5 size of a particular colour. The items are not to be precious and have to be whole in colour and not bitty. In my case, I had to collect objects that are Green.
