OUGD505 Studio Session: Own Brief Workshop

To try and help us with the direction of our projects, we had a studio session which was to help with where we were going to go with our projects.

We were asked to come up with a list of things we do not know about our individual projects:
  • Is my aim for the contents of my project reflective of the client?
  • Is the proposed ephemera relevant?
  • Does the connection between the two logos work?
  • Should the stick reflect the same as the research book?
  • Should the design work for both corporate and commercial clients?
  • Tone of voice- don't want to seem like begging
We the made a list of things as a class which we do not know about our briefs:
  • Is my target audience narrow enough?
  • Where shall I photograph my work?
  • What is my final full range of products?- What haven't I considered or need to try?
  • What stock is best suited/ most appropriate? Same for colour?
  • is the work I am producing necessary?
  • What do i have time to produce?
From this, we were then asked to print a copy of the brief that we wrote originally and bring it to the second half of the session.
Printed Copy
We then had to go through the brief and highlight the most important things within the brief (outlined in Pink):

Important things
These are:
  • Encourage people to visit
  • Raise Money
  • Publicise the charities needs/efforts
  • Tone of voice- not to sound desperate or needy
Then we had to make a list of things that are important but not written down:
  • The message of the brief and its context
  • How I can connect the briefs together
  • Anything printed needs to reflect the message
Then we had to identify words we had used which were fluffy or irrelevant (outlined in Green):

Fluffy or Irrelevant
These are:
  • Members of the public
  • Finished products (Range of collateral)
  • Printed collateral/ range
From this, we had to make a list of what we wanted to do and achieve in the next 3 weeks:
  • Photomanipulation
  • Effective use of Design Boards
  • Brand unusual ephemera
  • Time management
Then we had to re-write the brief we had already done based on what had been discussed

For some direction from the brief we had re-written, we had to make a list of products we were going to produce:
  • Bunting
  • Money Donation Box
  • Sponsorship Form
  • Wristbands
  • Tickets
  • Flyers
  • Posters
I felt that this session showed how we had originally started off with a slightly vague brief as we didn't know when we started what we would be producing and it highlighted how we should make it as detailed as possible from the start.
