Leading on from the posters that we had produced on the "Message & Delivary- Research" brief, the next brief was a continuation of this by having to produce 5 identical mail shots and D L envelopes promoting the opinion you have on your newspaper article with a mailing list of 5 contacts. It had to link to the posters that you had produced and the mailing list should have appropriate contacts.
First of all, I started producing initial layouts, placement and composition ideas for how I could produce my envelope and mail shot. I wanted it to work as a direct series, having it very simple and not complicated at all (see pictures).
|
Initial Ideas |
From these initial ideas, I decided that I was going to mix up aspects of 2 of the ideas so that I could produce one which had characteristics from each one. I produced it on a D L envelope scale so that I could visually see the dimensions I was working in and whether it would be successful in the confines of the space we had to use. (see picture)
|
Final Ideas and Scale |
This design allows for me to have use of image and type within my work from the posters. It means that they have equal spacing and have been considered in regards to placement as I had to play around with the incorporation of both aspects as well as the placement of the address to be able to fit it all together cohesively successfully which is why I like it.
Envelope
I handmade the envelopes themselves by producing a net to work from in order to get the particular D L Envelope sizing correct, as estabilshed on the brief.
|
5 Handmade Envelopes |
This gave me a starting point to work from. I liked the smoothness of the envelope and how it gave a clean aesthetic to work from.
Then I card cut the front of the envelope design, both for the front and the back.

Front of Envelope Design |
|
Back of Envelope Design |
The envelope is unique and focused in its message and intention, making sure that the audience cannot ignore the purpose of the mail shot from the start. The typeface works as a great headline type as it is demanding and commanding of attention whilst being intriguing as to its inceptio whilst the image works as a icon or logo which gives the mail shot some type of identity.
Mail Shot:
It was important for the mail shot to go with the whole aesthetic of the posters and the envelope so that meant that I wanted to keep it all the same, even if that meant that I produced the most simple and understated slogan possible.
|
Mail Shot Front |
|
Mail Shot Back |
In regards to the mail shot, I found it a lot more difficult to think of a concept or idea as to what to put in the envelope. I wanted something that was extraordinarily simple yet direct in its message. In the end, I stuck with having the bare minimum on a page with the slogan written the the typeface from the posters as, based on the medium it was going to be in, it would be difficult to produce something with lots of information that would stay true to the overall series. The slogans "Don't Be A Dope" "Get Drug Tested" keep it simple and to-the-point so that the audience know straight away the message and point behind the mailshot so that communication isn't a problem.

How Mail Shot fits inside the Envelope |
Mailing List:
In regards to my mailing list, I knew that I wanted to send my mail to people and places that doping and cycling went together as that is the people that my news article effects and therefore I wanted to reach out to that community as my target audience.
|
Tour de France Contact Details |
I decided to send my mail shot to the Tour de France because I thought that they could use it as a slogan or an advertisement within the race itself, particularly as the race winners have been dogged by Doping winners and they could do with being more publically vigilant.
|
Lance Arnstrong Contact Details |
I decided to send a copy to Lance Armstrong as he is the focus of my project and subject matter. Plus, the message in the mail shot should reinforce the message that he needs to hear.
|
British Olympics Association Contact Details |
I decided to send it to the Olympics cycling as the Olympics have been a huge focus this year in sport and gave the world something to be proud of which has been slightly overshadowed by the doping scandal. The olympics are aso very much against doping so I know that my mail shot will be relevant to them that they can use it to give to other athletes.
|
British Cycling Contact Details |
I decided to send a version to the Birtish Cycling Organisation as they can send it to other cycling clubs all around the Uk which I thought would mean that the message would get spread further out and would help educate cyclists on the importance of drug testing and anti-doping.
By sending it to these people and places, it would help produce a community that would be against the idea of doping in sport and would be able to take a stand within the cycling community, giving it the boost it needs.
|
Mailing List |
I produced a mailing list in the same style as the envelopes and mail shots so that it all goes together as a set or series. In order to write down my addresses, I realised that I wouldnt be able to produce the writing in the same style as the rest of my font as it would have to be smaller to fit on and would need to be legible for a postman to read so I made my type handwritten for the addresses which worked really well as they still linked in with the overall aesthetic to the series. I like how simplistic and understated my Mailing List looks, giving it a clean aesthetic which is focused on its purpose.
Final Pieces for Studio Deadline:
|
Final Pieces Altogether |
As a series that works as a succession and as a set along with the posters that we made in the previous brief, I think that overal my approach and answer to the brief was quite successful as I have kept it as similar as possible to the originals. It is a serious topic that I have managed to reflect in my approach and depiction of the subject matter due to the imagery of the IV Drip and the Blood Tubing flowing through the imagery.
As part of the brief, we had to address 1 of the envelopes to college and post it to see if it would return it to college and see the state that it would be returned to us in.
